"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" FRESHMEN ALL-AMERICAN BASEBALL TEAM

TUCSON, Ariz. — The 1998 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American baseball team, selected by the staff of Collegiate Baseball newspaper, features a who's who of top young talent across the nation.

The star-studded team includes a trio of National Freshmen Players of The Year, including:

LHP Hayden Gliemmo, Auburn

RHP Aaron Heilman, Notre Dame

2B Xavier Nady, California

Auburn's Gliemmo posted a 12-3 record prior to the regionals with a 4.51 ERA, 2 complete games, 95 strikeouts and 40 walks in 107 2/3 innings. His 12 wins are the most ever by an Auburn freshman.

Notre Dame's Heilman put up some staggering numbers for a freshman. Used mainly out of the bullpen in relief, he pitched in 31 games and saved 9 games with a microscopic 1.61 ERA. He ranks second in the nation in ERA in the latest NCAA Division I statistics. He also posted a 7-3 record with 78 strikeouts and 19 walks in 67 innings.

California's Nady was simply exceptional all season. A first team Pac-10 Southern Division selection, he hit .404 with 15 homers, 28 doubles, 70 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. In a 2-week span late in the season, he went 22-for-40 (.550) with 5 doubles, a triple, 5 home runs and 21 RBI. He set the California freshman school record for home runs. Against Washington State early in the year, he was 10-for-13 with a double, triple, 4 home runs and 11 RBI.
