College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (June 2, 2003)

RICE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Rice University (51-10) has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll for the second consecutive week.

The Owls won three straight games to capture the Houston Regional over the past weekend and have now won five consecutive games with wins in 12 of their last 15 contests.

None of the top eight teams from last week's poll changed since all eight won their regionals.

Several noteworthy upsets took place during regional action. Nebraska, the regular-season Big 12 Conference champion, was beaten in Lincoln, Neb. by S.W. Missouri St. Georgia Tech, another highly regarded team which finished second during the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season, was knocked out with two straight losses at the Atlanta Regional as the Yellow Jackets fell to Stetson and East Carolina.

Poll Notes: Four teams fell out of the poll this week in Tulane (1-2 last week), Arizona (0-2), Clemson (1-2) and Southern (1-2). New teams in the top 30 include four regional winners which include S.W. Missouri St., Ohio St., Houston and North Carolina.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
