BELLAIRE H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — Bellaire High School (Bellaire, Tex.) has been ranked No. l in the first regular- season Easton Sports National High School baseball poll.
Bellaire, 9-0, has outscored its nine opponents 103-13 and tossed four shutouts. In seven of nine games, the Cardinals have held opponents to two runs or less. On offense, Bellaire has scored 12 or more runs in four of nine games, including 25 against Northbrook H.S. Bellaire Head Coach Rocky Manuel, now in his 27th year of coaching and only a couple of wins from his 400th victory with the Cardinals, was thrilled to receive the news that his team is ranked No. 1.
"We have been ranked No. 1 in the nation nine times in the last 14 years by different polls," said Manuel. "We take a great deal of pride in that. Our players have a special commitment and teamwork that allows them to succeed on a regular basis. Our switch-hitting All-American (CF Mark McGonigle) is hitting .636. During one game, he homered from both sides of the plate."
Poll Notes: Riverside H.S. (Greer, S.C.), the pre-season No. 1 rated team in the Easton national poll, was 4-1 to start the season. Riverside’s lone loss was to Stratford H.S. (Goose Creek, S.C.), 8-2 in the championship game of the International Paper Classic. It marked the first loss by Riverside to a team in South Carolina since the 2002 baseball season. The loss also snapped a 13-game winning streak going back into last season. Riverside has still won 33 of its last 34 games.
Destrehan H.S. (Destrehan, LA) is off to a 7-1 record which includes a win over highly regarded Nova H.S. of Davie, Fla. Destrehan has now won five straight. Christopher Columbus H.S. (Miami, Fla.) is 5-0 to kick off the 2004 season. The team batting average is .394. Pre-season All-American catcher Alex Garabedian is hitting .450 with 2 home runs, 7 RBIs and posted a .800 slugging percentage. Monsignor Pace (Opa Locka, Fla.) started the season off with a 6-0 record and was ranked 10th.
La Cueva H.S. (Albuquerque, N.M.) started the season at 1-0 with an 11-4 win over West Mesa H.S. Pre-season All-American Matt Quillen, who hit 17 home runs with 50 RBI last season for La Cueva, hit a 3-run shot against West Mesa.
