College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (June 29, 2009)

MENCHVILLE H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. Menchville High School (Newport News, Va.) remains as the No. 1 team in the final 2009 Easton High School National Poll with a 26-2 record.

Lead by All-American Ethan Carter, the Monarchs captured its first state championship with a 7-1 win over Hanover. Carter threw a six-hitter after being given a five-run cushion in the first inning by his offense. His bid for a shutout ended with an unearned run in the seventh. Carter struck out six (he came in averaging 11 per seven innings), but had 14 groundouts for the game. Two years ago Carter threw a no-hitter in the quarterfinals but ended up losing the game 1-0, so this win was a perfect ending for his senior year. Hunter Lewis hit a solo home run to put the first run up for Menchville in the first inning.

Moving back into the poll at No. 11 is Capistrano Valley (Mission Viejo, CA). They defeated Edison (Huntington Beach, CA) 1-0 for the CIF Southern Section Division I final.

No. 12 Socorro (El Paso, TX) defeated Lufkin 12-7 to win the Texas 5A state title. Cory Falvey hit two home runs to complete his season with a city-record 17.

No. 13 Cartersville, Ga. won its fifth state championship in nine years after defeating Columbus two out of three for the title.

No. 14 Texas (Texarkana, TX) defeated Foy H. Moody (Corpus Christi, TX) 4-3 for the 4A state championship.

Norman Thomas (New York, NY) jumps in at No. 15 after beating James Monroe, 5-2 for the PSAL Class A title. Mariel Checo struck out 14 and allowed only four hits in the game.

Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, OH) is No. 20 after winnings its fifth state Division I title. They beat Pickerington North, 5-2.

Dropped from the poll are Reagan (San Antonio, TX), Yucaipa, CA, George Washington (New York, NY), Columbus, GA, Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, NJ), Brownsburg, IN, Brother Rice (Chicago, IL).
