College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (Jan. 25, 2010)

MENCHVILLE (VA) H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS NATIONAL PRE-SEASON POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. After finishing No. 1 in the country last year with a 26-2 record, Menchville H.S. (Newport News, VA) is poised once again to be on top of the heap in the 2010 Easton Sports Pre-Season National High School baseball poll.

While the defending Virginia 3A state champion is without its star player, Ethan Carter, from last season, the Monarchs have a solid core of players returning, including an exceptional pitching staff.

Topping the list are two hurlers in 6-foot-4, 230-pound senior RHP Austin Chrismon (committed to East Carolina), who was 10-0 with a 1.05 ERA, 80 strikeouts, 12 walks, 94 mph FB, and RHP Deshorn Lake, who played for Team USA's 16U team last summer.

Lake, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound junior, is from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and transferred to Menchville.

His fastball tops out at 96 mph, and he is being projected as a first round drfat pick in 2011. Chrismon is expect to go high in the draft this year.

Other top players include OF Teddy Brewer and catcher Jeff Gray (.360, 10 2B, 3 HR, 26 RBI), who are getting interest from Division I schools, and seniors Dan Moschler, Deron Hanley and Hunter Lewis.

The Monarchs also have several players coming up from their JV program which has won four championships in a row.

Last season the Monarchs only lost two games on their way to winning a state championship title.

Head Coach Phil Forbes feels strongly about this year's team with four quality pitchers, excellent defense and team speed to back them up. He expects this ball club to make it to the state finals once again.

For more on the top 30 high school pre-season teams, see the Jan. 29, 2010 edition of Collegiate Baseball. There are some very tight races in some states this year. A rundown of other top teams to watch this season will be published in the Feb. 26, 2010 edition. Both issues can be purchased for $3 each by calling Collegiate Baseball at (520) 623-4530.
