TUCSON, Ariz. Sumrall H.S., Miss. (35-1) finished last season as the No. 1 team in the land and will start the 2011 campaign as the top team in the 2011 Easton National High School pre-season poll.

The Bobcats captured their third straight 3A Mississippi state championship and are looking for a fourth.

Last season Sumrall outscored opponents 426-57. Of the team's 35 wins, 26 were by mercy rule. At one point during the season, Sumrall ended a 67-game win streak dating back to 2008.

Returning to anchor the pitching staff is LHP Luke Lowery, who has a 24-1 career record. Last season he was 11-1 with a 1.13 ERA, 102 strikeouts, 19 walks in 62 innings. The No. 2 starter is expected to be Tyler Simmons who was 9-0 with a 2.14 ERA, 67 strikeouts in 49 innings.

Top hitters are 2B/SS Conner Barron (.514, 12 2B, 6 HR, 60 RBI, 21 SB), C Austin Knight (.429, 11 2B, 26 RBI), OF Austin Carter (.380, 5 2B, 4 HR, 36 RBI) and 2B Bradley Smith (.458, 2 HR, 18 RBI).

The Bobcats also have added trasnfer P/SS Brandon Pennington from Northwest Rankin HS to their roster.

With 11 seniors on the 2011 squad, Sumrall will have an extremely experience ball club returning.

For more on the top 30 high school pre-season teams, see the Jan. 28, 2011 edition of Collegiate Baseball. There are some very tight races in some states this year. A rundown of other top teams to watch this season will be published in the Feb. 25, 2011 edition. Both issues can be purchased for $3 each by calling Collegiate Baseball at (520) 623-4530.
