BISHOP GORMAN (NEV.) H.S. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NATIONAL POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) is ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball National High School poll and will begin its season March 14.
The Gaels rolled to a 35-4 record last season and will try to capture their seventh consecutive Nevada state championship this year. Bishop Gorman returns 19 players, including 15 seniors. Six have already made NCAA Division I commitments.
Leading the team are Louisville Slugger All-Americans 3B/RHP Joey Gallo (Louisiana State), RHP Cody Roper (UNLV) and OF/RHP John Sewald (Arizona State). Last season Gallo set offensive records for home runs (25) in a season and RBI (78). Roper was 10-0 with a 0.56 ERA while Sewald led the team with 42 stolen bases.
Jesuit (Tampa, FL) keeps the No. 2 spot with a sparkling 9-0 record to start the season. Of the nine wins, six games were shutouts. The Tigers pitching staff has a 0.74 team ERA. Louisville Slugger All-American Lance McCullers leads the staff with a 4-0 record, 0.00 ERA, 32 strikeouts in 19.1 innings.
JW North (Riverside, CA) is No. 3 after capturing the No. 1 position among Los Angeles area high school teams with a 6-0 record. Top pitchers include Jack Johnson (2-0) and Rai Garcia (3-0). The Huskies recently won the Redlands Baseball Invitational.
No. 4 Columbus (Miami, FL) has a 9-1 record and handed Archbishop McCarthy, highly ranked by some polls in the preseason, one of its first losses of the season. The Explorers’ pitching staff has posted a 1.09 team ERA with 116 strikeouts and only 35 walks in 77 innings.
No. 5 Spanish Fork, UT opened its season with a 3-2 win over Layton. Pitchers Hayden Nielsen, Brady Corless, Kayden Porter and Jake Meservey combined to strike out 18 batters.
Carroll (Corpus Christi, TX) is No. 6 with an 8-0 record and is ranked the No. 1 pre-season team in Texas’ 5A division. The Tigers recently won the Miras Tournament. O’Shea Dumes struck out 10 during a 6-4 win over King in the championship game.
No. 7 Calallen (Corpus Christi, TX) also has shined with a 14-0 record. The top 4A team in Texas is hitting .392. Leading the offense are Lee May Gonzalez (.542, 4 2B, 1 HR, 10 RBI), Wyatt Mathisen (.500, 3 2B, 1 HR, 12 RBI), Preston Dorsey (.429, 3 2B, 2 3B, 11 RBI) and Tyler Neslony (.469, 5 2B, 4 HR, 6 RBI).
Columbus, GA moved to No. 8 with a 5-0 start that included two shutout victories. They recently defeated Russell County (Seale, AL), 3-2.
No. 9 Pelham, AL has emerged as a team to beat in Alabama with 14 straight victories. They have eight shutouts and have outscored opponents, 95-9. Thomas Lowery started the season 4-0 with 1 save, 0.00 ERA, 3 shutouts, 38 strikeouts in 29 innings. Other top pitchers include Parker Curry (4-0, 0.61 ERA, 30 K, 23 IP) and Hunter Soleymani (3-0, 1.47 ERA, 31 K, 19 IP). Leading the offense is Ty Pierce with a .450 BA, 22 RS, 3 2B, 3 3B and 8 stolen bases.
Providence (Charlotte, NC) is No. 14 with a 5-0 record
No. 15 Owasso, OK was 6-0. The Rams are currently on their spring break trip to Florida.
Nova (Davie, FL) was undefeated at 11-0 as they moved to No. 17. The Titans have outscored opponents, 100-13. Head Coach Pat McQuaid recently picked up his 800th career victory in a 9-1 win over Monarch. LHP/OF Troy Massaro leads the pitching staff with a 5-0 record, 1 earned run, 62 strikeouts in 34 innings. LHP Trent Monaghan also has a 5-0 record with 0.00 ERA in 24 innings. Top hitters include Massaro (.578, 4 HR, 19 RBI), Monaghan (.531 BA) and SS CJ Chatham (.538, 3 HR, 14 RBI).
No. 19 Parkview (Lilburn, GA) suffered a loss to Cartersville and has a 4-1 record.
No. 23 Huntington Beach, CA has emerged as one of the top teams in the Los Angeles area with a 5-0 start. They have beaten top California teams such as Mater Dei, Bishop Amat and Palm Desert.
No. 23 Bryant, AR is 6-0 and recently won the Billy Bock Tournament. Dylan Cross (2-0, 2.06 ERA) and Jordan Taylor (2-0, 0.60 ERA) threw a complete game one-hitter in a win over Pine Bluff. They lead a pitching staff with a 1.02 team ERA.
Northwest Rankin, MS is No. 25 with a 7-0 start. Five of the wins were shutouts. The Cougars have outscored opponents, 55-2.
Bishop Alemany (Mission Hills, CA) is No. 26 after posting a 6-1-1 record and a No. 2 ranking among schools in the Los Angeles area. Alemany’s Cody Thompson went head-to-head with Harvard-Westlake’s phenom Lucas Giolito with Thompson throwing a complete game, 2-1 victory. He gave up three hits, four walks and struck out seven. Giolito, whose fastball was clocked at 100 mph the week before, struck out four, walked three and hit three batters. In the following game, the two teams tied, 2-2.
No. 28 Clovis West (Fresno, CA) has suffered only one loss so far to Buchanan. They are 10-1 to start the season. Senior righthanders Tyler Ferguson and Ryan Soares are 3-0. The team is hitting .445.
Ranked No. 30 is Hamilton (Chandler, AZ). The Huskies lost their first game to Mesa Mountain View, 5-4, but have since won 7 in a row. They are schedule to play always tough Mountain Pointe in the near future.
Several teams fell out of the poll after slow starts, including Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) 3-2, Oxford, AL 9-6, Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) 5-2-1, Orange Lutheran, CA 5-2, Russell County, AL 7-7, Timber Creek, FL 5-3, Barbe, LA 7-3 and Madison Central, MS 6-2.
