PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release:
Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2012)
VANDERBILT WINS NCAA
DIVISION I RECRUITING TITLE
TUCSON,
Ariz. — Vanderbilt landed the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation, according to
Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s annual evaluation of NCAA Division I
baseball classes.
It marks the
Commodores’ first national recruiting title in the 30-year history of the
rankings by Collegiate Baseball. Vanderbilt secured the No. 2 class last
year.
In nine of the
last 10 years, a team from the Southeastern Conference has been the outright
recruiting champion or tied for first.
The rankings are
based on players who enroll at school each fall. Athletes who initially signed
with a school and then signed a pro contract after being drafted do not count in
the overall evaluation.
Of the 11-man
recruiting haul by Vanderbilt, six were drafted last June and features 11
freshmen. The class would have been even stronger, but star pitching recruit
Stephen Gant of Riverside H.S. (Decaturville, Tenn.) was found dead of an
apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on a county road April 3. He
was a top prospect, and many believed that he could have been a high draft pick.
Without further
adieu, here is a rundown on Vanderbilt’s No. 1 recruiting class which barely
nipped UCLA’s for the top spot.
"We are very
excited about this class as a whole," said Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin.
"The 11 guys we brought in will help us immediately on the field as well as from
a depth standpoint. All six pitchers in this class are righthanded which will
give us plenty of options to mix and match with a predominantly left-handed
staff returning."
The class, which
features six drafted players from last June’s draft, includes:
 | RHP Walker Buehler (Henry
Clay H.S., Lexington, KY), 14th round pick by Pittsburgh. |
 | RHP Carson Fulmer (All
Saints’ Academy, Lakeland, FL), 15th round choice by Boston. |
 | OF Rhett Wiseman (Buckingham
Browne & Nichols H.S., Mansfield, MA), 25th round pick by Chicago
Cubs. |
 | OF Xavier Turner (Sandusky
H.S., Ohio), 34th round by Boston. |
 | RHP Patrick Delano
(Braintree H.S., MA), 35th round by Boston. |
 | INF Dansby Swanson (Marietta
H.S., Kennesaw, GA), 38th round Colorado. |
Other members of
this star-studded class include:
 | RHP Tyler Ferguson (Clovis
West H.S., Fresno, CA), All-State. |
 | INF Tyler Campbell (Lake
Oswego H.S., Portland, OR), All-State. |
 | RHP Luke Stephenson (Triton
Central H.S., Fairland, IN), All-State. |
 | INF Kyle Smith (Mt. Juliet,
Old Hickory, TN), All-State. |
 | RHP Chris Raasch (Norcross
H.S., GA), All-Region. |
The rest of the top 10 includes:
2. UCLA, 3. Arizona St., 4. Louisiana St., 5. Clemson, 6. Stanford, 7. Florida,
8. North Carolina, 9. Miami (Fla.), 10. South Carolina.
The top 40 is in the attached PDF
file along with other recruiting classes that received votes. In addition,
previous recruiting national champions are also listed.
A comprehensive look at the top
16 recruiting classes is in the Oct. 5 edition of Collegiate Baseball
newspaper.
