NCAA PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT:
Monday, May 17, 1999 Dennis L. Poppe
Director of Championships, NCAA

ALL 16 REGIONAL SITES SELECTED FOR DIVISION I BASEBALL

OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS---All 16 regional sites have been selected for the 53rd annual Division I Baseball Championship, it was announced today by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.

The 16 regional sites are as follows:

Tuscaloosa, Ala. (University of Alabama, host)
Fayetteville, Ark. (University of Arkansas)
Auburn, Ala. (Auburn University)
Waco, Texas (Baylor University)
Tallahassee, Fla. (Florida State University)
Houston, Texas (University of Houston)
Baton Rouge, La. (Louisiana State University)
Coral Gables, Fla. (University of Miami)
South Bend, Ind. (University of Notre Dame)
Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State University)
Los Angeles, Calif. (University of Southern California)
Palo Alto, Calif. (Stanford University)
College Station, Texas (Texas A&M University)
Lubbock, Texas (Texas Tech University)
Winston-Salem, N.C. (Wake Forest University)
Wichita, Kan. (Wichita State University)

The committee voted to designate each site by the city name, rather than by host school or geographic location (East, Northeast, West, etc.).

By virtue of being awarded a regional, all 16 host institutions have been selected as at-large teams to the expanded, 64-team field but some could win automatic berths this week in their respective conference tournaments. Each regional field features four teams, playing a double-elimination format. All 16 regionals will be conducted from Friday, May 28, to Sunday, May 30.

Six of the 16 institutions have not hosted since the regional format was established in 1975: Arkansas, Baylor, Houston, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Wake Forest. Auburn last hosted a regional in 1978.

The remaining at-large teams, top eight national seeds and first-round regional pairings will be announced on Monday, May 24, at 2 p.m. Central time, during a live, half-hour program on ESPN. Unlike previous years, the committee will set the entire 64-team bracket through both the super regionals and the first round of the College World Series. The committee will not reseed the field after play begins. Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be determined after the regional winners are determined and will be announced on Memorial Day, May 31, at 2 p.m. Central time.

All 29 Division I conferences receive an automatic berth in the field of 64, along with 35 at-large selections. The championship, expanded to 64 this year, had been a 48-team field since 1987.

The 53rd College World Series begins play Friday, June 11, at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska.
